NSW Repairable Write Off Legislation (update)

Well it is official, last night Oct 21 2010 the new NSW repairable write off bill was passed as legislation
in parliament with the view of it going live from Nov 2 2010.

What this means is that you will no longer be able to purchase a written off vehicle in NSW to re-register
it, only if the vehicle is outside of certian restrictions will you be able to do this..you can read a past blog

What does this mean for Salvage Australia??

Well we know the new legislation in NSW is coming Oct 29, so what does this mean for the future of the salvage industry in australia and at least NSW for now?

Export? increase in used parts on repairs? Insurance company control of salvage going forward - meaning the end of salvage Auctions?? Be interested to hear some comments out there....

Vehicle write-off plan wins approval

A national theft reduction body says a NSW ban on re-registering written-off vehicles is “a step forward” in efforts to stop car re-birthing across the state.

However, preventing written-off vehicles from being re-registered in other states is a hurdle still to be faced.

The NSW Government introduced legislation last week prohibiting the re-registration of all written-off vehicles in NSW from next month.

RTA Repairable Write Off's

Well it now looks as though the new legislation is due to be tabled on October 16 for sign off, with the expectation to become LAW Oct 29 2010 to cease having repairable written off vehicles.

The new law applies to the following:
  • all vehicles under 15 years old

Exclusions to the new law are:

  • non structural hail damaged vehicle
  • personal value vehicles (i.e. you the policy holder chooses to keep your vehicle as salvage the insurer pays you vehicle value, less the salvage value back to y...

Now we know that both labour government and the NMVTRC are trying to stop all salvage vehicles from being re-registrable by both:
  • introducing the new NSW legislation to ban all repairable write off's (Vic and QLD are also looking at how this goes before bringing it into the respective states after NSW
  • forcing assessors to make more repairable write off's, statutory write off's by way of assessing the damage points and areas of damage against severity of damage (i.e. 3 impact points on par...

NSW Salvage Legislation Updates

As we don't seem to be able to make a government, labour is still looking to bring in the new legislation to stop any repairable salvage. It has been hinted that if labour gets back in they will be looking to chair this new bill Jan 2011 - lets hope that Labour doesn't get in to power...
